A new law will be tabled in the National Assembly before the end of the year to stipulate who can actually operate health services/facilities in the country. This is according to Minister of Health,Duke Johnson Jersey, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy who at a press conference yesterday told media operatives that the Bill, which will be called the ‘Health Professionals Act’ will deal with all the areas of medical technology, including opticians as some opticians are functioning as optometrists. The Bill has already been drafted and has gone through consultation. It has also received the support from various organizations such as the Guyana Pharmacy Council, the Nursing Council and the Dental Council.Kaieteur News understands that the Bill was also passed through the Attorney General’s office and Cabinet. It is currently at the Cabinet sub-committee level.Minister Ramsammy was at the time also referring to allegations made against popular herbalist, Dr Veerasammy Ramaya,Baker Mayfield Jersey, who was accused of selling expired drugs to his patients and to the general public. When questioned on the issue,Cheap MLB Gear, Minister Ramsammy said that these herbalists are not licensed to sell drugs,Wholesale Hockey Jerseys Online, nor are they qualified to do so.He explained that Guyana does not have the relevant laws to prevent such activities, as the Medical Practitioners Act makes it very clear who can be medical practitioners, but the medical council is mainly focused on regulating their own doctors, and as such a new law has to be put in place. However, according to the Health Minister, now that his Ministry has been made aware of the allegation,Blake Swihart Jersey, his staff will pay a visit to Dr. Ramaya’s clinic some time soon. Minister Ramsammy did not want to give more details to what action the Ministry will take, as it would jeopardize the work of his staff. He added that after the first visit, constant checks would be made. While the Minister acknowledged the fact that the health ministry has the responsibility of regularly checking pharmacies, he urged for the support of the general public.“We at the Ministry have the responsibility of checking but we can’t do it alone…we can’t be at every pharmacy every minute of the day and that’s where the cooperation of the public comes in. The consumers simply have to refuse to accept expired drugs… they need to check the drugs,” Minister Ramsammy said.He admitted that while some drugs are sold in envelopes, consumers still have a right to demand to know where the pills are coming from.“The system was more chaotic back in the years…but I think that we should reject those things and it means that this particular herbalist will get a visit from the ministry.”Dr. Ramsammy added that with the experience of the Health Facilities LicensingActs, persons will now understand why the ministry would want to regulate these people. “It has nothing to do with politics, race, religion… it’s about protecting all of us and those are some of the things we need to do.”Over the next couple of weeks, Dr. Ramsammy said that the Ministry would enforce the Health Facilities Act on those persons who are selling drugs and doing laboratory tests when they are not registered to do so.“There are certain things you need to regulate with a soft hand and there are certain things that you must regulate with sternest actions.”Recently,Alvin Kamara Jersey, former employees of Dr. Ramaya had told this newspaper that the herbalist was selling expired medication to the public.
